CHILDREN'S AUTHOR COMING TO PENINSULA LIBRARY

Meet Victoria Bond, author of Zora and Me at the Peninsula Public Library on Tuesday, April 12th at 4:00 PM. Zora and Me is a historical fiction novel set in the hometown of Zora Neale Hurston and draws on her stories, novels, and life. You are welcome to bring a copy of the book to be signed after the presentation. Registration is required and will begin on March 28, 2011.

FATHER LARRY'S DAD PASSES

After batthling pneumonia for two weeks Edward Duncklee peacefully passed into the New Life with the God he loved and served so well through his life. Rev. Larry was fortunate enough to spend his father's last moments with him under the fantastic care at Winthrop Medical Center; having him med jetted here from Florida. He would like to offer his deepest appreciation for all who have been praying for him and his family during this time. Services for Edward Duncklee will be at the Charles Schmitt Funeral Home located at 3863 Merrick Rd. in Seaford 516-785-3380 on Wednesday from 7pm - 10pm & on Thursday from 2-4pm & 7 - 9:30pm. The funeral will take place at William the Abbot Church (2000 Jackson Ave. Seaford) Time is planned for 10am but check the paper or call the funeral home for exact time. In lieu of flowers or Masses, Father Larry's mom has requested that donations be made in "dad's honor" to Birthright/1859 Wantagh Ave./Wantagh Ny 11793 or to a charity of your choice. (His dad was also fond of Momma's House, Pronto of Long Island, and mi Casa in Guatemala.

VOLUNTEERS CLEAN UP!

Volunteers from The Inwood Country Club and local gardeners helped clean the property between Mary's Manor and the Long Island Rail Road Station. It is believed that the land is owned by the State and has been over grown and collected litter in the past. The property runs alongside and behind Marys Manor. At times it has been used as a resting place for transients which has caused concern for our seniors. Juanita the Director of Mary's Manor would like the State to lease the land to Mary's Manor to create a backyard park for the residents; while others would prefer to expand the parking lot to provide additional parking for our seniors who drive. A great job was done by all volunteers as their effort were not only noticed but commended.

NEW CLASSES OFFERED AT THE CENTER!

On Thursday March the Five Towns Community Center held it's first classes in English Enhancement and Computer Literacy for adults from our community. The classes came about as a result of suggestions made by the Inwood Hispanic Association. The Association describe the need for members of our town to learn English and to become computer literate. These parents want to be able to better communicate in English and have knowledge of the computer so they can monitor what their children are doing on the Internet. The teachers are led by the Spanish Knights of Columbus activist Ed and include two aspiring teachers who are working on their masters at Molly College. Dan Cornejo and his cousin John are leading the way in the computer literacy program. The program organizers are Felipe Plaza, Veronica Ortiz, Khalil and Yiset. We thank all volunteers and the Center for providing these essential services to our community.

#4 School Installs Elevator with Tribute to Alumn

Number Four School is 101 and still having fun! On the 101st day of school this year, the school held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly completed elevator. Daniel Cornejo, a Number Four School alumni (and former kindergarten student of current Principal Ann Pedersen) cut the ribbon and took the initial ride. The significance of a former student returning, one who needed home instruction when his medical condition prevented him from attending school and who continues to require handicap accessibility, was felt by the group of administrators, teachers and community members in attendance. A plaque hangs in the elevator vestibule with a picture of Daniel from his kindergarten days and the quote from Henry Ford "If you think you can do a thing, or think you can't do a thing you're right". It certainly feels like a "right" that the 101 year old building is now fully handicapped accessible.

GOSPEL MEANS GOOD NEWS!

It sure did at the Five Towns Community Center as the gymnasium was packed with over 300 community members. The stage served as the center of display for incredible talent of dancers, singers, mimes and musicians. Audience members were in awe that we had such talent among us right here in our community and small surrounding area local houses of worship. Short speeches were given spreading good words of what our comunity has to offer as well as the many wonderful services offered by the Five Towns Community Center. Cogratulations to all involved a special salute to chief organizer and facilitator - Greg Nunn! A great day was had by all!

Planning commission Recommends the SALE of the County Yard!

After two public hearings in which County Legislator Kopel and Civic Leaders such as Roy Meserole argued that the county should not sell the property adjacent to Inwood Park, the Nassau County Planing Commission recommended that the county put the property up for sale. In even a stranger decision the commission said that they agree with the public in that part of the property should be used for senior housing although senior housing was not the focus of the public hearings; not did anyone recall such recommendations ever being mentioned. This community clearly does not want the property sold. As the commissioner explained this is only a recommendation and the County legislature will decide the final fate of the property. Realizing that the fight is not yet over this community is disappointed that the planing commission did not respond to the wishes of the Inwood community.
